Created by Bjørn Karmann and Tore Knudsen, Alias is a teachable “parasite” that is designed to give users more control over their smart assistants, both when it comes to customisation and privacy.

Created by Bjørn Karmann at CIID, Objectifier empowers people to train objects in their daily environment to respond to their unique behaviours. Interacting with Objectifier is much like training a dog – you teach it only what you want it to care about. Just like a dog, it sees and understands its environment.

Created by Bjørn Karmann in collaboration with Nicolas Armand and Lars Kaltenbach, Pyrograph is a CIID project inspired by the thermal printers used for receipts in all shops. The Pyrograph draws with dots burned with a 450 °C tip on to paper and listen to the ambient sound in the room and distort the same.

Paragraphica is a camera that utilizes location data and AI to visualize a “photo” of a specific place and moment. The camera exists both as a physical prototype and an online camera that you can try.

As per tradition each year, December is when we look back at the amazing work published on CAN. From ingenious machines and installations to mesmerising experiences that leverage new mediums for artistic inquiry – we added scores of projects to CAN’s archive in 2019. Here are some highlights.
