23/12/2015: 10 Most Memorable Projects of 2015

As 2015 winds down we look back at almost 200 extraordinary projects we’ve covered this year on CAN. And as is the case every year, picking the ten ‘best’ is hard if not impossible, as each of them has driven the conversation around the state of art and design in their own unique way. And yet, the following ten works stuck with us and, if anything, make great starting points for reflection and inspiration as we head into the new year. Until we continue our coverage in early January: happy holidays and thank you all for a great 2015!

Prismverse – Spatialising paths of light inside a diamond

Created by XEX for Dr.Jart+, ‘Prismverse’ is an installation inspired by light rays travelling in a diamond with Brilliant cut (wikipedia) – a form that produces highest brilliance with maximized light return through its top. Surrounded by complex geometrical tessellated mirror walls, the visuals on the floor, their reflection and omnidirectional sound encapsulate the visitor.

Gysin&Vanetti – O is not a letter, it’s a circle

Gysin-Vanetti (Andreas Gysin & Sidi Vanetti) are an artist duo exploring images and patterns using the type geometries of multipurpose displays. What characterises the projects shown here is that their intention is to not modify the layout (or visual organisation) of the chosen hardware – they work with what the existing has to offer. Within these hard constraints they search for infinite visual permutation. Using only type and digit, Gysin-Vanetti build images, animations and generate patterns.

Lift – A luminous petal filament that ebbs and flows

Created by Patten Studio and currently on display at SHoP Architects, Lift is comprised of 24 geometric petals attached to a single spine. Each petal, actuated using a shape memory alloy known as nitinol, can move up and down silently in response to motion it detects.

Rec All – A puzzling universe of (multitouch) creatures

Created by Romain Cazier at ECAL, Rec All is an interpretation of the geometrical style puzzle games, widely popular on mobile. Taking some of this genre’s features, Romain designed a singular universe, where strange creatures with a cyclic behaviour are generated from a simple gesture.

GLASS / G3DP – 3D printing of optically transparent glass

Created as a collaboration between Mediated Matter Group (MIT Media Lab) and the Glass Lab (MIT), GLASS G3DP is a additive manufacturing process that enables 3d printing of optically transparent glass that also allows tunability by geometrical and optical variation that drives form, transparency, color variation, reflection and refraction in all things glass.

Untitled No. 1 – 24 hour news cycle video collage

Untitled No. 1 is a video collage using only images collected from the previous 24 hour news cycle. The entire video was computationally generated using corpus based artistic stylization developed by Parag K. Mital as part of his ongoing research.

Entropic System is a drawing machine that inscribes ornate geometric patterns into a bed of ‘black beauty’ sand. Made by the Denver-based media artist Laleh Mehran the device has instability built-in to it, and creates a feedback loop where approaching it affects its output.

Created by Patten Studio and currently on display at SHoP Architects, Lift is comprised of 24 geometric petals attached to a single spine. Each petal, actuated using a shape memory alloy known as nitinol, can move up and down silently in response to motion it detects.

Developed at the MIT Media Lab’s Mediated Matter Group, ‘Data-Driven Material Modeling’ refers specifically to the process of the creation of high-resolution, geometrically complex, and materially heterogeneous 3D printed objects at product scale.

Created by TEM in collaboration with Vincent de Belleval, The Beacons is a virtual environment built around a catwalk that uses a dynamic content system piped through a room sized inverted zoetrope, created from 2.5m tall, 0.5 tonne, 60rpm motorised beacons x 3.

Mesa Musical Shadows is a permanent “singing pavement” installation, designed by Montréal’s Daily tous les jours for the north plaza at the Mesa Arts Center in Arizona.

Designed by the Mediated Matter Group in collaboration with Stratasys and inspired by her most recent album—Vulnicura, The Rottlace is a series of masks for Björk, exploring the themes associated with self-healing and expressing ‘the face without a skin’.

Created by Dana Zelig, Traces project explores the concept of programming everyday materials, a form of “physical programming” where objects are “made to act” on some form following specific instructions.

CAN reports on MUTEK 2015’s audiovisual performance programming and the ‘HOLO encounters’ live Q&A’s we did with artists Robin Fox and Hiroaki Umeda.

This tutorial shows you how to write code to create a brief looping animation, using computationally-generated graphics, suitable for both online and lenticular publishing. Then, using the unique GifPop services, you can get your GIFPOPs printed.

The Augmented Hand Series is a real-time interactive software system that presents playful, dreamlike, and uncanny transformations of its visitors’ hands.
