With HOLO 1 being in the world for a little more than two months, the conversations about the first issue of CAN’s 226-page magazine are beginning to shift. Instead of “Congratulations!” people now ask “How’s the magazine doing?”

226 pages, 34 contributors from 8 different countries, 12 months of blood, sweat and tears – the first issue of HOLO magazine, CAN’s exciting print spin-off that is “more a book than a magazine,” is near.

Developed at the Ars Electronica Futurelab, Spaxels (a portmanteau word from space pixels) are LED-equipped quadcopters. They make up a drone swarm that can “draw” three-dimensional figures in midair.

Created by Kyle McDonald, “Sharing Faces” uses a megapixel surveillance camera and custom software to match the face locations of the persons looking at the screen. As the person moves, new images are pulled from the database matching the new location and create a mirror-like image of yourself using the images of others.

Powered by the multiply changing, rising and ebbing granular high-frequency, dissolves into a pointillist delirium of colored dots in the latest piece by Rainer Kohlberger

Created by Andreas Gysin in collaboration with Sidi Vanetti, Fari is a kinetic installation created with an array of moving light heads in a geometric configuration and programmed as a choreography.

AIT (“Social Hacking”), taught for the first time this semester by Lauren McCarthy and Kyle McDonald at NYU’s ITP, explored the structures and systems of social interactions, identity, and self representation as mediated by technology.

The installation consist of moving lights that continuously illuminate space from different angles creating an intersections of form, perspective and shadow. In almost pure darkness the visitor is invited to explore the derelict space as details are illuminated and space reshaped.
