Summer 2019 Diversions!

“My God is Machinery; and the art of the future will be the expression of the individual artist through powers of the machine – the machine doing all those things that the individual workman cannot do. The creative artist is the man who controls all this and understands it” – Frank Lloyd Wright, circa 1901…

MoonQuest – Procedurally generated adventure game

Created by Wizard Mode (Ben Porter), MoonQuest is a single-player procedurally-generated adventure game set in a strange nocturnal world. The gameplay is a mix of roguelike and minecraftian genres and sits somewhere between Terraria and Spelunky, with the main aim to search the generated world for moonstones.

Gysin&Vanetti – O is not a letter, it’s a circle

Gysin-Vanetti (Andreas Gysin & Sidi Vanetti) are an artist duo exploring images and patterns using the type geometries of multipurpose displays. What characterises the projects shown here is that their intention is to not modify the layout (or visual organisation) of the chosen hardware – they work with what the existing has to offer. Within these hard constraints they search for infinite visual permutation. Using only type and digit, Gysin-Vanetti build images, animations and generate patterns.

Soap and Milk – Organic figments of data

Created by Waltz Binaire, Soap and Milk is designed as an interactive experience of data, allowing the observer to perceive social media as an overwhelming and organic figment. Each microscopic droplet represents a tweet and once an entity gets spawned – the viewer is invited to physically interact and explore its behaviour.

Creative-coding on iOS with C4 – Tutorial

This tutorial will introduce you to creative-coding on iOS with C4, a powerful framework for creating expressive artworks and user experiences. Written entirely in Swift, C4 takes a modern approach to working with animation, gestures and media.

10 Best and Most Memorable Projects of 2013

It’s that time of the year when we take a week break and unplug from the internet. Before we step away, it is our duty to highlight some of the projects that we found to be the most memorable.

Delineating the Future – an interview with N O R M A L S

CAN goes in-depth with the Paris-based ‘anticipatory’ design studio N O R M A L S to learn about their forthcoming dark, dense, and dizzying graphic novel series. Working process, representational techniques (that bridge illustration and code), and a critical reading of contemporary design fiction.

Clockwise (2021) is a generative and experimental audiovisual piece that explores the concept of space-time, Zeno’s paradoxes related to the infinite subdivision of the units of measurement of space and time, and their experimental abstract audiovisual representations.

The latest iteration of a decade-long investigation into modular construction systems by Canadian Artist Jesse Jackson, Marching Cubes is an algorithm-inspired syntax for building volumes from 3D printed blocks.

Developed at the MIT Media Lab’s Mediated Matter Group, ‘Data-Driven Material Modeling’ refers specifically to the process of the creation of high-resolution, geometrically complex, and materially heterogeneous 3D printed objects at product scale.

Created by Reza Ali, F3, [Form From Function], is a playful and powerful 3D design app that enables you to live code 3D form, rapidly iterate on its design, and export for 3D printing, rendering and animation. F3 uses signed distance functions (SDFs) to build forms – designing 3D forms using 2D image cross sections.

A P P A R E L is an augmented reality experimental fashion prototype by the Paris-based anticipatory design studio N O R M A L S. Turning data and network activity into identity and style, the project replaces the details of contemporary couture with jiggly mesh geometry digital overlays.

Created by Jonathan Fletcher Moore, Artificial Killing Machine is an autonomous mechanical installation that uses the public database on U.S. military drone strikes to visualise deaths of individuals that would otherwise be represented purely as statistical data.

Over the past few months, in preparation for their Book of Eniarof crowdfunding campaign, tutors and students at HEAD have been exploring the use of playing cards as a method for designing and developing games, concepts, attractions, and playful art objects of various ilk…

Created as a collaboration between between Radiohead, Nigel Godrich, Stanley Donwood and Universal Everything, Polyfauna is a living, breathing, growing touchscreen environment, born from abstraction of the studio sessions from King of Limbs and the organic drawings of Stanley Donwood.

CAN gets a sneak peak of the new installation by Universal Everything opening this week at the new Media Space gallery at the Science Museum in London. We also speak to Mike Tucker about the project development, concepts and the ideas leading up to the final install.

Glassified is a modified ruler with a transparent display to supplement physical strokes made on paper with virtual graphics. The goal of the device is to complement rather than replace a typical ruler and since the display is transparent, both the physical strokes and the virtual graphics are visible in the same plane.

Project explores the relationship between landscape, agriculture and digital fabrication by intercepting the process of precision farming by generative design.

Project explores the relationship between digital and biological fabrication by using silk threads laid down by a CNC machine followed by a swarm of 6,500 silkworms spinning flat non-woven silk patches.

From custom geometry to adding textures to 2D and 3D shapes, Amnon Owed shows you practical examples of a number of crucial building blocks for 2D/3D Processing projects.

The Carp and the Seagull is an interactive short film about one man’s encounter with the spirit world and his fall from grace. It is a user driven narrative that tells a single story through the prism of two connected spaces. One space is the natural world and the other is the spirit or nether world.

In this hands-on tutorial I will walk you through the steps needed to turn YOU into an interactive virtual polygon.
